Abstract
The study investigated Information Skills of Extension Workers on the Use of Agricultural Research Output in North-West, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and the population of the study comprises all the extension workers working at the state government level of seven (7) states including Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara and Multistage cluster sampling technique was adopted for the study. Balloting method was applied to select the two states that serve as the clusters for the study. More so, out of 2034 total population, 234 extension workers were chosen as the sample size of the study following the guiding principle of Research Advisor’s Table 2006. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection and the reliability result was .891, the data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics where means and standard deviation were used. SPSS version 23 was the application software used to run the analysis. Responses on each item on the questionnaires are based on a midpoint of a mean score of magnitude 3.0 and above would therefore indicate agreement while a mean score below 3.0 signified disagreement a low standard deviation indicates homogeneity of the response and high standard deviation reveals far away from the mean. The study’s findings indicate that extension workers lack digital skills and predominantly use traditional print materials, such as journal articles and newspapers while the use of online resources is significantly lower. Based on this, the study recommended that agricultural extension organizations and relevant stakeholders should organize regular capacity-building training programs focused on improving extension workers’ digital information skills. These trainings should include how to do a search on the Internet, how to use databases, how to use journals online, and how to retrieve agricultural research products effectively to help them access modern information sources and among others.
