Abstract
This paper advocates the need for adoption of web technologies for reference and information services in Nigerian academic libraries. It stresses the importance of web technology applications to academic libraries which is to enable them to serve patrons in a timely manner with greater efficiency. It also enhances collaboration, engenders participation, promotes interaction and creates an environment for openness in academic libraries. It identifies the benefits of web technology application to academic libraries services to include; provision of equal opportunities for access to all users, save users time in accessing information services and retrieving information resources they need among others. The study approach was based on the existing literature and other documented information that advocates for technology adoption in academic libraries. It further discusses some of the web technologies that can be adopted to enhance reference and information services such as websites, Mobile based services, blogs, Rich Site Summary (RSS), instant messenger, social networking sites among others. The paper also highlights challenges being faced by academic libraries in the application of web technology such as digital divide, inadequate ICT infrastructure, lack of policies to support Web technology use among others. The paper concludes that convergence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) such as computers, satellites, telecommunications and fibre optic technologies have made the implementation of web technologies in Nigerian academic libraries easier as a result of their ability and capacity to process, store, and disseminate digital contents such as texts, images, audio and video that aids generation, transfer, sharing and dissemination of information to users. It suggests the concerted efforts by the management of academic libraries and their parent organizations on the procurement of adequate and state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure in order to bridge the gap between developed and developing countries, provision of adequate ICT infrastructure, formulation and implementation of policies on web technology use in Nigerian academic libraries among others.
